In Crisis – Travel Retail Voices: Dan Cappell, Ontario International Airport

There’s something that’s goin’ round, that’s shutting our borders down
It’s a bad time for our sick and our old
CNN’s nightly lullaby, tells of hundreds more that’ve died
I shut off the TV and think all alone, how long can this go on? – Jeff Orson, Pray

Welcome to In Crisis – Travel Retail Voices, our new podcast series in which we speak to travel retail executives around the world to see how they and their businesses are coping with the COVID-19 crisis.

Today’s episode features Dan Cappell, Chief Commercial Officer at Ontario International Airport Authority in Southern California, an airport which, like all its counterparts in the US, has been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

Dan Cappell: The industry’s walking, talking Trinity man

Before joining the airport company, Dan was Aviation Consultant with Leigh Fisher Management Consultants, working with airports in Baltimore, Denver, Phoenix and Charlotte, as well as Ontario International and Orange County’s John Wayne Airport in California.

Dan, an Englishman, is one of the few industry executives to have worn all three Trinity hats – supplier, retailer and airport operator.

His senior roles before moving to the US included Acting Chief Commercial Officer of Abu Dhabi Airports; General Manager Retail & Car Parks at Melbourne Airport; General Manager Operations for Aer Rianta International-Middle East; Deputy Managing Director of Abu Dhabi Duty Free and In Flight Catering; and General Manager of Nestlé International Travel Retail.

He has been a long-time supporter of the Trinity concept, a professional executive dedicated to ensuring as equitable a relationship between industry stakeholders as possible. Martin Moodie caught up with him earlier this week by phone, not in California but in Arizona.
