The Moodie Davitt ‘Roarport’: Stranded at the border but captivated by the view

The Moodie Davitt Roarport

The Moodie Davitt Report is providing exclusive daily coverage of Wild Tiger’s Roar Trip, one of travel retail’s boldest CSR initiatives, via our special line extension, The Moodie Davitt Roarport.

Via phone and social media, we’ll be with Gautom Menon and Paul George Vedanayagam on every stretch of their epic 65-day road trip from Kerala to Cannes and be there to greet them on the French Riviera when they arrive on the eve of the TFWA World Exhibition. We are unlikely to be alone.

Duty free retailers: If you’d like to meet Gautom and Paul along the way (see their destination course below) let us know at Martin@MoodieDavittReport.com.

KYRGYZSTAN. Wild Tiger adventurers Gautom Menon and Paul George Vedanayagam are now in their sixth country – Kyrgyzstan – after almost getting stranded for the night at a border crossing. Fortunately, they received a little help from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

And our intrepid co-pilots also need your help to support the excellent cause of helping to save the tiger and its habitat. You can click here to donate (see below for more details). And while an act of good is a rewarding experience in itself, as Wild Tiger notes, the company is also offering the opportunity to win a fantastic prize.

All those making a donation will be in with a chance of winning a two-night all-inclusive stay at any one of the Taj Safari’s luxurious lodges across India. The winner will be announced on 10 September on Wild Tiger’s social feed and winners will also be contacted by email. Click here for more details.

Back to the story of how The Roar Crew almost lost their stripes – and a great deal of time – on their epic journey. Despite leaving early from Kashgar, China in an attempt to get across the border in time, what was meant to be a six-hour journey turned out to be a 15-hour ‘adventure’.

The pair reached the border crossing to Kyrgyzstan only to find it was shut. Waiting around indefinitely was certainly not in The Roar Crew’s itinery. “We were stuck in no man’s land with no network, no food and very little water. The temperature outside was two degrees and we were prepping to spend the night in the car,” said Gautom.

“But luck was smiling upon us, we managed to contact someone we knew in Kyrgyzstan and they urged the Ministry of Foreign affairs to open the gate for us. Twenty minutes later, we finished our border formalities and were roaring into the town of Naryn.”

Breathtaking views: The Roar Crew thoroughly enjoyed the drive from Naryn to Bishkek – once they’d actually managed to successfully enter Kyrgyzstan

The Roar Crew then took a scenic drive through the mountains to the capital city of Bishkek, where they are meeting the Indian Ambassador and the Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism.

“The drive from Naryn to Bishkek was breathtaking to say the least,” reported Gautom. “We have never made as many pit-stops in a single day. There simply were too many scenic spots.”

There are sure to be more beautiful views as the journey to Cannes continues, and we will keep you updated on The Moodie Davitt Report website.

The Roar Crew have met with ambassadors, youths and locals to raise awareness of the urgent need for tiger conservation. Young and future generations deserve the chance to share the planet with these majestic creatures too

ABOUT WILD TIGER RUM: Kerala-based Wild Tiger is India’s first rum to be produced from a blend of molasses and cane spirit.
