UK/INDIA. Portland Design will undertake the retail planning of a new Retail, Dining & Entertainment (RDE) Village at Bengaluru Airport City, a 23-acre multi-purpose site which is being built alongside Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru.
The London company, which will work in conjunction with DP Architects Singapore, has been appointed to the RDE Village assignment – a major mid to high-end retail and lifestyle destination project – by Bengaluru Airport City Limited (BACL).
“The RDE Village is built on the vision of creating a new destination with a deep connection to the community, culture, and environment, focusing on human-centric design” – BACL CEO Rao Munukutla
Portland said that the RDE Village development is envisioned to be situated in an open, fluid environment that seamlessly links multiple zones, through interactive and sensory experiences that encourage longer dwell time and repeat visits.
Further, it said, anchor retail and food & beverage tenants at the RDE Village will be accompanied by rotating pop-up stores and dining experiences driven by local and international chefs.
Bengalaru Airport City will encompass a built-up area of 1.1 million sq ft. As well as the RDE Village, it will house a business park, technology hub, health district, convention & exhibition centre and concert arena, among other elements.
Portland Design Regional Director Stephen Walsh will be leading the space planning for the project. He said: “The RDE Village will be a transformative shopping, dining and entertainment experience for the communities it will serve in Bengaluru and beyond, enabling visitors to explore and enjoy multi-itineraries in varying sensory landscapes.
“Our work will help create the stories and experiences that will attract, invite, circulate, display, persuade and reassure customers as they spend time and money benefiting from all that will be on offer.”
BACL CEO Rao Munukutla said: “We are delighted to partner with DP Architects Singapore and Portland Design UK who are world leaders in retail, dining and entertainment spaces. The RDE Village is built on the vision of creating a new destination with a deep connection to the community, culture, and environment, focusing on human-centric design.”
He added: “This is reflected in our overall design sensibility, which is innovation driven, incorporating sustainable features. We are confident that the RDE Village will continue to add further impetus in making Bengaluru one of the most vibrant cities in India.”
The Bengaluru Airport City project will be phased and fully completed in 2026.
