Moodie Davitt WeChat: Key stories from Week Six

CHINA. We are pleased to bring readers a summary of this week’s posts on The Moodie Davitt Report’s WeChat Official Account. The platform continues to show strong readership growth in China (see graphic below).

The Moodie Davitt Report has stepped up its Mandarin language coverage of key China-related stories for 2022, anchored by our WeChat platform, published four times a month. Readership is climbing impressively with the platform now attracting 2,139 followers, along with very encouraging reading and sharing levels.

Moodie Davitt WeChat is curated under the direction of Penelope Zhou, our Hong Kong-based Chinese Editor, and company Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie, also based in Hong Kong. They are supported by two further staff in Mainland China.

Making the headlines: China Duty Free Group (CDFG) has secured the Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport T4 duty free contract. CDFG and Zhejiang Airport Group Corporation will set up a joint venture company to operate the stores in the arrivals and departure areas. Spring is in the air: Very positive news as sales at Hainan’s offshore duty free stores surged by +151% year-on-year during the recent Spring Festival holidays to CNY2.13 billion (US$333) million, according to the Hainan Provincial Department of Commerce. Plain sailing: CDFG subsidiary CDF Cruise Services Co has extended its cruiseline duty free foothold with a second CSSC Carnival three-year exclusive contract onboard the Costa Mediterranea. The ship, with an expanded duty free retail space of around 600sq m, will begin sailing various Chinese port routes by the end of this year. Roaring into the Year of the Tiger: L’Oréal Travel Retail Asia Pacific welcomed the Year of the Tiger with a dynamic Armani Beauty campaign in Hainan. With a ‘New Year, New Strength’ theme, the promotion ran throughout January at China Duty Free Group’s (CDFG) Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex before moving to the Hainan Tourism Duty Free Shopping Complex, where it runs until 28 February. Changes in the Korean market: Luxury French house Chanel has confirmed its intention to close duty free boutiques in Busan (with Lotte Duty Free) and Jeju (with The Shilla Duty Free). Get glowing in the Lunar New Year: Swedish beauty tech and wellbeing house Foreo has partnered with China Duty Free Group to launch its ‘Glow Up’ set in Hainan travel retail. The set – Luna Mini 3, Serum Serum, Serum and Micro Foam Cleanser – made its debut on 1 February at CDFG’s Haikou Mova Mall and Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex. Hainan showcase: Powerful French beauty group L’Oréal is the latest big name to announce its return participation in the second China International Consumer Products Expo (Hainan Expo). The event, to be held in Haikou from 12 to 16 April, is hosted by the Hainan Provincial Bureau of International Economic Development (Hainan IEDB). Daigou dynamic: South Korea’s third-biggest travel retailer by sales, Shinsegae Duty Free, has posted an +80.6% year-on-year increase in Q4 net sales to KW823 billion (US$688.4 million). Enhanced operating profit of KRW12 billion (US$10 million) was in line with market expectations and net profit (- KRW4 billion) also represented a sharp improvement over the same quarter last year.
