Duty Free Americas and Attenza (Motta Internacional) triumph in Tocumen Airport duty free contract awards

PANAMA. Duty Free Americas (DFA) has been awarded (subject to Board ratification on 31 August) two of the three ten-year duty free contracts at Tocumen International Airport Terminal 1 after a highly competitive open tender, while Attenza (Motta Internacional) has won the third concession.

The result is a huge boost for Duty Free Americas, which has secured two-thirds of the terminal’s duty free business. The Falic Group-owned retailer has guaranteed US$1.2 million per month per concession for the contracts. Attenza guaranteed US$677,000 a month, an airport spokesperson confirmed to The Moodie Davitt Report.

“This is a big win for us and I am extremely proud of my team and their work to achieve this result. I personally waited ten years for this win. I assure our vendor partners that they will be impressed with what we have planned for Panama.” – Leon Falic, Duty Free Americas

The airport will earn around US$370 million over the period of the contracts. Duty Free Americas alone is paying around US$290 million in guarantees during the term while Attenza has guaranteed some US$81 million.

Each contract features 700sq m of duty free space. Retailers could bid for a maximum of two areas, with one company operating one space and the other operating two.

Duty Free Americas Director Leon Falic told The Moodie Davitt Report: “We are very proud of this win. I live in Panama and our home office is in this great country. My new office that we will be moving to next week is five minutes away from the airport, and you can be sure we will be giving our stores a lot of attention.

“This is a big win for us and I am extremely proud of my team and their work to achieve this result. Our stores will be prominent and will cater to the different nationalities flying through Tocumen.”

Falic added: “I personally waited ten years for this win. I assure our vendor partners that they will be impressed with what we have planned for Panama.”

Motta Internacional/Attenza CEO Erasmo Orillac confirmed his pleasure at the award to The Moodie Davitt Report. In a note shared with suppliers, he said, “We will be operating 725 meters in various locations throughout this terminal in a new ten-year concession.

“We are working on the actual distribution of spaces, and our commercial team will be contacting you [suppliers] once we have a definite design for the stores that we will be operating throughout the airport.”

Incumbents Grupo Wisa and Motta Internacional’s contracts expire in December 2017.

As reported, Dufry, DFS, Top Brands, Duty Free Americas, Grupo Wisa and Motta Internacional attended an initial meeting with the airport in June.
