Avinor issues €830 million retail and dining tender across key Norwegian airports

NORWAY. Norwegian airports operator Avinor has issued a major tender covering speciality retail, convenience and food & beverage outlets spanning four major Norwegian airports: Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger and Trondheim. The eagerly anticipated bid process features 62 outlets and carries an estimated sales value of of €830 million over the five-year term, starting from 2023.

Avinor is marketing this valuable opportunity with a campaign through The Moodie Davitt Report (see tender banners on our home page).

The airport company said it is seeking “local and international partners with inspiring and sustainable concepts within retail and F&B that elevate the travel experience for our passengers”.

The fashion & accessories contracts are valued at around €100 million in projected sales over the five-year term, led by multiple locations at Oslo Airport (pictured)

Categories include convenience, books, fashion & lifestyle, electronics, souvenirs and pharmacy, alongside all food & beverage at Bergen Airport and two F&B concessions in Oslo. In total, 38 contracts will be awarded. Ten of these include multiple units. The tender is designed to encourage both smaller and larger players to participate in the competition, said Avinor.

The airport company said it welcomes new concepts to the retail mix, and is seeking a blend of strong international and Norwegian brands.

Avinor said its ambition is to offer “a mix of attractive concepts that will strengthen the price perception and drive conversion rates, as well as the local Sense of Place”.

It added that the winning partners would benefit from:

  • A prime location in a market with millions of travellers with high spending power
  • International brand and product exposure – both in physical and digital channels
  • High priority and support to optimise the growth potential of the business.

To facilitate what it terms ‘next generation travel retail’, Avinor plans to develop a customer data and analysis platform. Customer insights will be continuously gathered and shared with partners, it said, “to enable optimisation of operations and store offerings, as well as customisation of marketing and customer communication”.

To ensure the opportunities are attractive to as many potential bidders as possible, the five-year contracts from 2023 are based on “variable rent, risk-reducing measures and competitive terms,” noted Avinor.

An information meeting and virtual tours of the airports are scheduled for 19 January. The bid deadline is 8 March, with negotiations with short-listed candidates later that month. Final decisions are expected by May, with contract signing in June.
