Zürich Airport introduces mobile charging stations

The new charging stations allow consumers to top up their phones securely, at one of 16 locations

SWITZERLAND. Zürich Airport this month enhanced its customer service drive by introducing new mobile charging stations across its facility, free of charge for consumers.

And through a special locking technique, consumers can leave their devices charging at one of the 16 available stations while they use other airport services, or visit the shops.

Each of the charging stations has six secure “˜lockers’ to host the phones. They are 12 stations airside and four landside.

The airport developed the service in partnership with Sony. The units were said by Zürich Airport to have “set new standards for design, functionality and user-friendliness”.

The concept of the charging stations has been well received by consumers and by media across Switzerland, the airport reported.

The move is one of many consumer-driven initiatives made by the progressive management at Zürich Airport to boost non-aeronautical activities, both revenue-generating and non-revenue-generating.

As announced today, the airport’s commercial turnover (net sales to consumers in retail, duty free and food & beverage) posted a +5.6% surge year-on-year in January, to CHF37.8 million (US$35.2 million). Airside sales rose by +5.1%, with landside sales climbing by +6%.

Turnover (net sales) per departing passenger slipped by -0.9%, to CHF47.10 (US$43.88). Airside the figure was down by -1.3%, while landside it was -0.5% on the previous year.
