USA. Today’s video selection comes from New York, where LaGuardia Gateway Partners (LGP) recently opened the final elements of the new LaGuardia Airport Terminal B.
As reported, the terminal opened in June 2020 as part of what will ultimately be an US$8 billion upgrade of the airport. The commercial district features an array of shops and restaurants promoting New York names alongside global brands.
The video tells the story of the facility’s transformation, with architectural and design finishes inspired by New York’s neighbourhoods, and a collection of public art installations commissioned for the terminal through a partnership with the Public Art Fund.
While the new Terminal B was being built, the original Central Terminal Building (CTB) remained operational, with a plan that included building over the top of the old facility, as the video explains. The last of the 1960s-era CTB was torn down in early 2022 to make way for active aircraft taxiways under the new terminal’s sky bridges.
The terminal was recognised with UNESCO’s Prix Versailles, Airports, as the best new airport in the world in 2021.
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Executive Director Rick Cotton said: “The activation of the final two gates at LaGuardia Airport’s new Terminal B is the final capstone for a magnificent and award-winning new terminal that is providing passengers with a world-class experience from curb to gate.
“Spacious interiors, floor-to-ceiling windows, inspiring public art and iconic restaurants and shops all combine to meet the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s new standard in airports: best-in-class facilities worthy of the region.”
With Terminal B complete, Vantage Airport Group is focusing on another key New York project, the terminal development of John F. Kennedy Airport Terminal 6.
