TRI-POD Series 2: In conversation with Tim Young

This episode of TRI-POD, The Moodie Davitt Report video podcast series in association with The SEVA Group, features Tim Young, a youthful veteran of the drinks and travel retail sectors.

Tim entered the drinks business in 1987 with a UK wine company called Three Choirs and over the intervening 35 years has enjoyed a stellar career in local markets and travel retail with two big multi-nationals, Seagram and (from 2002 to early 2021) with Brown-Forman.

Since then Tim has set up his own enterprise called Young Spirit Consulting, designed to help premium beverage businesses and brands unlock sustainable and meaningful growth.

Tim chats with co-hosts Roger Jackson of The SEVA Group and Martin Moodie about his diverse life and career journey to date. In the process, he ranks as our first guest to appear on TRI-POD while suffering from COVID (a little croaky but otherwise doing well, we are pleased to say).

The son of a railway man, and therefore raised with travel – albeit of a different kind – integral to his family life, Tim also had a passion for geography from an early age.

After graduating, he faced a choice between becoming a statistician working for the UK Government or working for an English winery. It was no contest. The winery won. That choice, allied to his lifetime interest in travel and geography would ultimately converge in an outstanding travel retail career.

In a warm, engaging and occasionally emotional conversation, Tim relates how a near-death experience reshaped his perspective on life and makes him value every day on the planet.

We also take Tim to our resident TRI-POD desert island. Find out what duty free treats he would choose to imbibe while there; what music he would listen to and (driven by that choice) which three guests he would invite to a select private dinner. It’s a great episode.
