GERMANY. Leading food service player casualfood has opened 12 permanent outlets and several mobile locations at the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport. Most of them are located airside.
The company, which said it is the largest food service operator at the new airport, has developed three new brands for the location: east side berlin, Berlin Pub and Deli Berlin. It said that these and its ‘Deli Berlin Mobiles’ offer a “genuine taste of Berlin”, drawing on the city’s history and offering guests a wide range of dishes from both East and West Berlin.
Also present are casualfood’s established concepts including Goodman & Filippo, Hermann’s, Beans & Barley, basta!, Kilkenny Pub, Quicker’s and franchise brand Kamps.

Co-Managing Director Stefan Weber said: “It goes without saying that we would have liked to launch our stores at Berlin Brandenburg Airport in different circumstances. Nevertheless, we are pleased that the time has finally come – our site manager Benedikt Augustin and his team are ready for the first guests. Due to the current situation, we will initially open the new east side berlin, our Italian concept basta!, the new Deli Berlin mobiles and the Kamps franchise in Terminal 1. In line with the German government’s current guidance, we will initially offer a takeaway service. We will respond promptly to further developments in the coming days and weeks.”
“We will liaise closely with the airport operator concerning the opening of our other food service concepts, based on the frequency of flights and passenger numbers at the gates and, of course, the inauguration of Terminal 2,” added Co-Managing Director Michael Weigel.

The concepts at a glance:
east side berlin: Original images from the East Side Gallery and other details bring the history surrounding the Berlin Wall to life and create an atmosphere that “blends art with cuisine,” said casualfood. The menu ranges from knuckle of pork, meatballs and potato salad to East German specialities such as Grilletta burgers, Solyanka soup and Spreewald gherkins, plus other favourites like avocado toast with egg.
Berlin Pub: This features a combination of “nostalgia and modernity”. Large-scale pictures on the walls tell the capital’s story. Overlooking the airport’s runway, guests can enjoy local products such as beer from Berlin, snacks such as pretzels, sandwiches and curried sausages.
Deli Berlin: A “trendy and urban all-day concept” that has adopted the Berlin bear as its mascot. The terrace on Willy-Brandt-Platz is a highlight and overlooks the main entrance to the airport. Deli Berlin serves fresh pasta, salads and bowl food, daily lunch specials and sandwiches. The drinks menu includes Berlin beer and locally made lemonade.
Deli Berlin mobiles: Featuring the Berlin bear, the new Deli Berlin mobiles offer quick-serve refreshments close to the gates. Customers can buy freshly prepared favourites to take away, such as pretzels, filled baguettes and bagels, hot dogs and schnitzel rolls. Sweet goods include chocolate croissants, doughnuts, muffins, confectionery and coffee specialities.

Other casualfood concepts include Goodman & Filippo, which serves popular dishes from the USA and Italy; Hermann’s snack bar; beer and coffee house Beans & Barley; Italian pizza & pasta concept basta!; Kilkenny Irish Pub; Quicker’s convenience and travel essentials store, plus bakery Kamps, run as a franchise.
