The QDF Series (2): Qatar Duty Free steps up its innovation agenda

Introduction: Qatar Duty Free is building towards this year’s FIFA World Cup – which kicks off in Doha on 21 November – and the opening of Hamad International Airport’s (HIA) much-anticipated expansion with a flurry of store openings and innovations.

The Moodie Davitt Report recently toured HIA – including a rare sneak preview of the expansion – guided by Qatar Duty Free Vice President Thabet Musleh.

Today we showcase the latest addition to Qatar Duty Free’s luxury line-up and some exciting new additions to its food & beverage and mainstream retail offers.

And we salute Hamad International Airport’s achievement in being named ‘Best Airport in the World’ for the second consecutive year at the recent Skytrax World Airport Awards 2022.

The Watch Room

The Watch Room, opened in early May, brings together some of the great watch names of the world. Baume & Mercier, Bell & Ross, IWC, Montblanc, Panerai, Ulysse Nardin, Zenith and others are presented in an elegant and refined environment. The understated and refined VIP area (below) offers limited-edition watches and luxury, personalised service.

Burberry

Hamad International is the first airport in the travel retail world to feature the new Burberry design concept. The boutique offers an attractive selection of ready-to-wear and outwear pieces, bags and accessories, while shoes have become the latest addition to the range.{Photo courtesy of Qatar Duty Free}

The Burberry Boutique features the brand’s signature pieces, including Lola and Olympia bags, the famed trench coat and classic cashmere scarves.

The luxury design concept takes on a minimalist approach with edgy dimensions to give its space a breath of fresh air. The store is designed with a curved façade and a Champagne-coloured exterior reflecting the brand’s new contemporary brand identity.

The interior captures the essence of the brand in a vibrant setting with brown and Champagne-coloured walls and ceiling, offset by a check tile floor pattern.

Cannes on steroids and gobsmacked in an airport wonderland

The expansion will feature 380 trees (and we are talking seriously big trees, many already in place); 26,000 shrubs; a waterfall; and a dazzling array of retail and food & beverage experiences, the likes of which I promise you the airport world has never seen.

Kashkha

Kashkha (‘Beautiful’ in Arabic), a hugely popular Middle Eastern fashion brand, opened in Hamad International Airport’s South Node last year. The brand weaves traditional Arabian fashion with modern style, offering a distinctive range of women’s clothing for every occasion with a wide selection of Jalabiyas, Hijabs, modest fashion and nightwear.

“It has proven to be a phenomenal success,” says Musleh. “It’s very good quality and very easy to shop.”

Go with the Flo

Flo Café offers consumers a stress-free coffee break before boarding in Concourse B. “Everything you taste is all made in-house,” says Thabet Musleh.

Day2Day

Great name, great concept (conceived in-house by Thabet Musleh). Travel essentials are provided in an open, well-ranged environment with a focus on quick service and accessible prices.

Brioche Dorée

Brioche Dorée is a French chain of bakery-café restaurants founded in 1976 in Brest. The urban bakery café offers Hamad International Airport travellers a range of traditional French products of high quality and freshness in a quick-service setting.
