The Knowledge Hub Sessions: Unlocking confectionery category growth at the Virtual Travel Retail Expo

INTERNATIONAL. We continue our enhanced coverage of the pioneering Virtual Travel Retail Expo by bringing readers highlights from the event’s Knowledge Hub. We focus here on the Confectionery Data Workshop titled ‘Unlocking the key to category growth’.

The session was led by Contineo Labs & Generation Chief Executive & Owner Alex Seret.

Seret offered a preview of a new confectionery data panel which he said will be a “key element” in supporting decision-making during the COVID-19 recovery period.

He presented models for the building of a panel and highlighted the differences in compiling data and information in a stepwise approach.

For the panel, five leading confectionery companies – Ferrero, Haribo, Lindt & Sprüngli, Mondelez International and Perfetti van Melle – have shared quarterly sales data since the start of 2018.

The first iteration of the panel considers over 40 brands, and more than 750 products, across five market segments in eight sub-categories.

“The strength of this panel is that a key reading of the industry is now available broken down by segment and categorisation, which individual actors can use internally to make their own reports,” Seret said.

He added that the next steps for the panel will involve onboarding new participants, having a better geographic split, measuring additional attributes and increasing the scope of the data which, Seret said, is a “key objective”.
