BAHRAIN. A joint venture partnership between TAV Construction and Arabtec has won the US$1.1 billion contract to build a new terminal at Bahrain International Airport.

The 220,000sq m terminal will increase airport capacity from 4 million to 14 million passengers per year. The contract also covers construction of a main service building, air and land side infrastructure works and a multi-storey car park.

Construction work will begin in March and is scheduled to take 51 months to complete.

“Since the Istanbul Ataturk Airport project in 2000, we will have built a total of 16 airports in the Middle East and North Africa region – seven of them are the gateways of the capital cities of their respective countries,” said TAV Group President & CEO Sani Şener.

“We are proud to be announced as the preferred bidder and to add Bahrain Airport to our portfolio, which includes ongoing projects in the UAE, Oman and the KSA. We’ll employ our extensive expertise at the Bahrain Airport project and continue contributing to the development of the GCC region.”

Bahrain Duty Free manages the key retail areas at Bahrain International Airport under a long-term contract.
