GEORGIA. TAV Airports has held the ground breaking ceremony for a new 12,000sq m terminal at Tbilisi Airport.

It will have the capacity to serve approximately four million passengers per year and is expected to be completed at the end of 2017.

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, who attended the ceremony, also awarded TAV Airports President & CEO Sani Şener the State Medal of Distinguished Service for his contributions to the country.

Şener said Tbilisi Airport had special meaning to TAV as it was the company’s first investment abroad. It has been operating Tbilisi and Batumi airports since 2005 and 2007 respectively.

“Until now, we have invested over US$100 million in Georgia. Following the transfer of the operations, we have created a significant synergy,” he commented. “Turkish Airlines increased the number of flights to Tbilisi from three to 32 per week. Pegasus and AtlasGlobal airlines started to launch flights to Tbilisi. We strive to contribute to taking the historical relationship between the two countries to a further level.”

He also said he was honoured to receive the State Medal. “I am receiving the award on behalf of the hard-working and persevering employees of TAV. With the motivation of this medal, we will continue to strengthen the collaboration and good relations between Turkey and Georgia.”

The terminal project also includes the renovation of a runway and taxiways as well as the construction of a new aircraft parking area for five aircraft.
