Tapping into “a thriving modern food scene”: HMSHost wins 10-year contract to operate 14 F&B locations at Boston Logan International

USA. Autogrill subsidiary HMSHost has won a 10-year contract to operate 14 food & beverage locations at Boston Logan International Airport. The restaurateur has partnered with Master ConcessionAir.

The contract was awarded by MarketPlace Logan, an affiliate of Boston-based New England Development and the developer and manager of the airport’s concessions programme. It has a projected sales volume of US$540 million and covers terminals A, B, C and E.

HMSHost said its aim was to offer several of New England’s traditional dining favourites while appealing to modern culinary trends. The restaurants will be located in a combination of new and currently occupied spaces, with all openings scheduled to be completed by the middle of 2020.

Opening in Terminal B will be Kelly’s Roast Beef, a family-owned casual eatery. Founded in 1951, the restaurant chain has four eastern-Massachusetts locations and claims to have invented the modern roast beef sandwich.

Monument Restaurant & Tavern (rendering below) is a modern take on the classic American tavern from Charlestown, Massachusetts. Terminal B will also feature four Starbucks locations.

In Terminal C, HMSHost will open an airport location of Hanover Street’s year-round indoor marketplace, Boston Public Market (rendering below). Local market vendors will offer fresh, seasonal food and drink from New England’s farmers, fishers, and food entrepreneurs. The marketpace will also feature a full-service bar and a Starbucks store.

Terminal E’s Saloniki Greek is another Jody Adams creation. It is a quick-serve Mediterranean-style restaurant with a full-service bar.

HMSHost will also operate the existing Starbucks locations in the Terminal C-E connector, as well as in Terminals E and A.

“HMSHost is thrilled to have this opportunity to enhance the restaurant offerings at Boston Logan International Airport with our well-known local partners,” said HMSHost President & CEO Steve Johnson. “We are eager to continue working with Massport and MarketPlace Development on providing outstanding dining options and service to travellers.”

HMSHost Vice President of Business Development Anthony Alessi commented: “The New England region has so much to offer in the way of culinary tradition and a thriving modern food scene. We’re so excited about bringing these special and iconic restaurants into the airport.”

MarketPlace Logan noted that Back Bay mainstay Stephanie’s had opened its second Boston Logan location earlier this year in Terminal E. Local Italian eatery Lucca Restaurant & Bar (rendering below) will open in Terminal B before the end of this year.

Other local favourites set to open in 2019 include: Alta Strada, B. Good, Bruins Bar, Celtics Bar, Mija Cantina and Tequila Bar, Not Your Average Joe’s, Santarpio’s Pizza and Tico.

In retail, Boston-based athletic brand New Balance will open its first-ever retail store at an airport while New England Collections will debut two additional airport gift shops in 2019.

“Our team has been working diligently to welcome these iconic brands and local favourites to our hometown airport,” said MarketPlace Development President Paul McGinn. “Through our collaboration with Massport we are committed to bringing local flavour to Boston Logan passengers for a true Boston and New England experience each time they visit the airport.”
