Strange Nature gin claims top packaging accolade at New Zealand Spirits Awards

Innovative New Zealand gin brand Strange Nature has claimed the Packaging Award at the 2023 New Zealand Spirits Awards.

The awards, presented by Spirits New Zealand and Distilled Spirits Aotearoa (NZ), are described as a celebration of spirits in the country, with Strange Nature claiming the trophy for Best Overall in Category.

The success follows the brand winning the Best Spirits Innovation in New Zealand’ trophy at the 2022 awards.

Strange Nature Distilling Manager and Part Owner Rhys Julian told The Moodie Davitt Report: “Our journey to conceive a bottle as unique as the gin it carries, has been a rewarding challenge, and the outcome has been well worth the effort.

“The final product, filled with intricate detail and functionality, is one we’re immensely proud of. We believe it delights those who enjoy discovering the deeper beauty within.”

As reported, Strange Nature gin combines Kiwi ‘inGinuity’ with winemaking skills and experience. It is grape-based (Sauvignon Blanc) and boasts strong sustainability credentials.

The gin is naturally flavoured, bearing all notes the Sauvignon Blanc varietal is known for: part tropical and zesty with hints of fresh pineapple, candied grapefruit and a touch of kaffir lime and blood orange. The taste is described as part savoury and herbaceous-piney juniper, blackcurrant leaf and fresh green pepper.

Research into the development of the distinctive Strange Nature bottle included searches through lead light glass windows at salvage yards to find the right colour. The bottle features a copper-coloured disc to echo copper gin distilleries. Its top is a bespoke wooden topper with a natural cork stopper. ✈

Strange Nature is thinking big, in this case very big at Queenstown Airport in New Zealand. The impactful digital advertising  on the arrivals/departures board at the South Island airport is designed to reach skiers, predominaantly Australians, flowing into Queenstown for the ski season.
