SSP takes “uber-cool Camden” to London Stansted Airport in new restaurant concept

UK. Food & beverage concessionaire SSP has opened a new restaurant at London Stansted Airport inspired by London’s “uber-cool Camden and its famous market stalls”.

The new 700 sq m concept, The Camden Bar & Kitchen, extends across two floors and has seating for 350 people. It features a full service premium bar offer on the upper level and a bar and deli (for grab and go items) on the lower level.

London style: The Camden Bar & Kitchen extends across two floors and showcases local street food vendors and artists.

The lower level bar has been designed with an industrial feel, SSP said, and presents “colourful flamboyance” throughout. A striking green steel central stairway connects the kitchen and the restaurant upstairs.

To reflect London’s dynamic artistic community, SSP has worked with a group of postgraduate students from St Martin’s College to create a mural of London’s renowned street food scene. Local graffiti artists, the Graffiti Kings, have also created artwork for the restaurant’s walls.

The morning menu includes a ‘Rise & Dine’ offer featuring classic breakfast dishes. The main menu offers traditional classics such as fish and chips, steak, egg and chips and healthy salads, alongside double stacker burgers and Thai and Indian influenced street food.

The Camden Bar & Kitchen menu also features a variety of Camden street food vendors in rotation, each taking a prominent slot on the menu during their tenure.

Baba G’s is the first such vendor to take up residence, offering spice-filled treats including the ‘Crazy Lamb Jalfrezi Burger’.

Market menu: Diners can enjoy traditional classics, double stacker burgers and Thai and Indian influenced street food.

Local beers including Camden Hells Lager and Camden Pale Ale from Camden Town Brewery are also on offer, alongside other premium beers, wines and a selection of cocktails.

The restaurant also offers a power charging area within the bar called the ‘Glow Zone’. It houses LED light pads as well as wireless charging points. These are designed to illuminate when customers charge their phones, creating an eye-catching effect.

SSP UK & Ireland CEO Simon Smith said: “The Camden Bar & Kitchen transforms one of the largest and most prominent spaces in the airside departure lounge into a modern eclectic restaurant, reflecting the spirit of contemporary London and its most famous food market.”

London Stansted Airport Retail Director Ben Green commented: “We are delighted to welcome The Camden Bar & Kitchen to London Stansted as the latest addition to our excellent line-up of great restaurants and bars.

“This is a very exciting time for the airport as the first phase of our £600 million [US$772.3 million] transformation of the passenger experience begins to take shape, new long-haul services to Dubai, the USA and Canada launch, and all in a year when we will be London’s fastest growing airport.

“This fantastic new concept recreates the buzz and flavours of London’s most iconic food market and we are extremely proud to offer millions of passengers the chance to enjoy what we’re sure will prove to be an extremely popular destination before taking to the sky from Stansted.”
