Sky Duty Free awarded duty free concession at Foz do Iguaçu Airport in Brazil

BRAZIL. Sky Duty Free has been awarded the first-ever duty free contract at Foz do Iguaçu Airport, also known as Cataratas International Airport, gateway to the famed Iguazu Falls.

The exclusive contract, which covers arrivals and departures, is the airport’s first duty free operation and follows a recent terminal expansion. The new facility was inaugurated with a VIP ceremony in February and the duty free tender launched on 26 March.

It is the second landmark in recent days for the independent travel retailer. As reported, Sky Duty Free celebrated the official opening of its first land border duty free store in Foz do Iguaçu on 4 May.

“We are planning to open in three or four months maximum,” Sky Duty Free Director Alex Beridze told The Moodie Davitt Report, adding that he was confident of very good business once the COVID-19 crisis eases. He added that the company will be announcing several new contracts in the months ahead.

Prospects received a major boost in January when Brazil’s Ministry of Economy confirmed an immediate doubling of the duty free allowance for airport duty free shop purchases.

Brazil is currently in the grip of the outbreak, with some 163,000 confirmed cases (the eight-highest in the world) as of earlier today and over 11,000 deaths. Its tourist industry is vital to the national economy and the world-famous Iguazu Falls one of the world’s great tourist attractions.
