Shenzhen Duty Free Group captures key contract at Guangzhou East Railway Station

CHINA. Shenzhen Duty Free Group has won the rights to operate the departures duty free shop concession at Guangzhou East Railway Station, following a tender.

The company will manage two stores covering 163sq m on the fourth floor under its Times DF branding. These will serve Hong Kong-bound travellers from the station.

The announcement is particularly timely given the reopening of the Mainland-Hong Kong border this Sunday (8 January) after three years of closures or heavily restricted access and services.

Shenzhen Duty Free Group said that the project is “of great strategic significance”, strengthening its position in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area duty free market.

The retailer noted that this begins a new partnership with Guangzhou Railway Group and represents a first duty free rail contract for the group. Shenzhen Duty Free Group said the move demonstrates “its operational and management strength and core competitive advantages in the duty free business”.

The company said it planned to offer an attractive range of genuine duty free goods at reasonable prices to outbound travellers on the Hong Kong route.

The agreement follows other recent successes for Shenzhen Duty Free Group that include contracts for departures and arrivals stores at Shenzhen Baoan International Airport Terminal 3, departures duty free at Fuyong Wharf ferry port (close to the airport in Shenzhen) and a cruise offshore duty free project with China Merchants Shekou Industrial Zone Holdings, signed in December.

Founded in 1980, state-owned Shenzhen Duty Free Group is one of the longest established duty free retailers in the China market. ✈
