Schiphol introduces gate delivery service for liquor and fragrances on US-bound flights – 31/08/06

NETHERLANDS. From today, passengers travelling through Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to the US and passengers travelling on US airlines may again purchase liquor, perfume and other liquids at the See Buy Fly Shopping Centre. But such items will have to be delivered to the gate.

Purchases will be sealed and given to the passenger at the departure gate. The new US-style “˜Gate Delivery’ system has been made possible by the concessionaires of See Buy Fly and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol said it has taken this measure in consultation with the airlines and concessionaires. “By instituting this procedure, the relevant parties wish to maintain a good level of service to passengers in compliance with the prevailing security measures,” it noted.

As a result of this month’s recent terror alert in the UK, the US authorities have prohibited passengers from carrying liquids, gels and certain other items purchased pre-security in their hand baggage on flights to the US and onboard US carriers.

While the situation for post-security airside purchases has eased, gate delivery is still being demanded. Such a system has already been introduced in many locations, including Dublin, Stockholm Arlanda, the UK, India (all flights not just US-bound) and Helsinki.
