Schiphol Airport updates app with indoor wayfinding technology

NETHERLANDS. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is helping passengers to navigate more easily through the airport with new indoor wayfinding technology.

Developed in partnership with mobile developer M2mobi, the updated airport app includes a new map, location detection and indoor navigation facilities, which make use of beacon technology.

Location technology claims to have an accuracy of up to five metres, enabling passengers to easily find their gate
Schiphol says it is the first major hub to have integrated wayfinding technology

More than 2,000 beacons have been placed throughout Schiphol Airport, replacing GPS which does not work inside buildings. Said to have an accuracy range of five metres, the location detection technology enables passengers to easily find their way to their boarding gate via the navigation functionality of the map.

According to Schiphol, it is one of the first major airports to have integrated indoor wayfinding into its own mobile application, which is under constant development.

M2mobi Project Manager Mike Smolders commented: “We have been working very hard with Schiphol on indoor location detection and are extremely pleased with having developed such a user-friendly solution with an accuracy range of approximately five metres.”

M2mobi CEO Michiel Munneke said: “We are proud of our innovation partnership with Schiphol. Outdoor, mobile navigation has become a commodity, but indoor navigation is still in its infancy. It’s great to see that we can work so successfully with Schiphol to explore the boundaries of what is possible in this area.”
