Scandinavian Airlines drops onboard duty free sales

SCANDINAVIA. Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will stop selling duty free products onboard from this autumn.

The airline said its decision was based on a desire to reduce the overall weight of its aircraft, which in turn saves fuel and cuts harmful emissions.

Climate concerns: SAS cited a need for sustainability and changing passenger behaviour as reasons behind its decision to drop onboard duty free sales.

“Tax free sales have long been a popular service onboard our flights amongst passengers who have used it,” SAS stated. “But our passengers’ buying behaviour has changed and sustainability has become more important than ever before – for both our passengers and SAS.”

SAS said it would instead develop solutions “to offer passengers more modern ways of buying and receiving goods in connection with their journey”.

An array of other onboard changes will also be introduced in the coming months to reduce weight, SAS said.

EVP Commercial Karl Sandlund commented: “SAS is aiming to cut emissions by at least 25% by 2030. Every step on the way to sustainable travel is important. Every initiative to reduce weight and thereby cut fuel consumption helps.”
