Russ Berrie solves toys for boys conundrum – 20/06/07

The Footnotes bears: Rocksie (in pink) and Rockie (in blue)

UK. In response to what it calls the “frequently limited” choice of plush toys suitable for boys, Russ Berrie has introduced Prehistoric Pets, part of the Softies range for 2007.

Prehistoric Pets comprises a collection of four realistic-looking dinosaurs, each in two sizes. The Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Brachiosaurus come in 12″ and 16″ sizes (Brachiosaurus in 14″ and 20″).

All are made from the Caress material for a cuddly, soft feel, and come with hang tag. Recommended travel retail prices run from £7.99 to £12.99.

Director Duty Free Sales Paul Widdop explained: “We’ve had plush dinosaurs before in the Russ offer, but this selection is much more realistic in terms of look and colour. We think they’ll be a real winner with boys”¦and a lot of girls too.”

In a second product launch, Russ Berrie is offering a new way for children to listen to their favourite music with the Footnotes bear.

Each bear has speakers in its feet and an adaptor in the front pocket of its dungarees that attaches to any iPod or MP3 player. By pressing the paw, the user can listen to the tune.

The Footnotes bears – Rocksie dressed in pink or Rockie in blue – are battery operated (four AAA batteries), enabling them to be taken anywhere.

Retailing at about £18 in travel retail, the Footnotes bears are available now.

Widdop has reported a positive initial reaction from buyers. “We introduced the Footnotes bears at the Spring Gift Fair [in the UK] and have had a tremendous response,” he said. “We’ve shown them to a number of buyers from airlines and ground shops and are very confident that Footnotes are going to be one of our big-selling items for 2007.”
