SCOTLAND/FRANCE. Rémy Cointreau today announced the acquisition, through its subsidiary Rémy Cointreau UK Limited, of Bruichladdich Distillery Company Ltd.
The acquired company owns Bruichladdich single malt scotch whisky and its assets based on the Isle of Islay, Scotland.
As reported, the signing of the purchase agreement was announced on 23 July 2012.
The transaction marks Rémy Cointreau’s first move into the premium single malt Scotch whisky market, a category experiencing strong growth worldwide, especially in the high-end segment.
The deal sustains Rémy Cointreau’s long-term value strategy, geared to investing in international premium spirits with strong savoir-faire, the company said in July.
Bruichladdich was purchased in December 2000 by Mark Reynier and a group of private investors who resurrected the Victorian distillery.
Total transaction value amounted to £58 million (US$92 million) comprising £48 million (US$76 million) for the acquisition of the entire share capital of Bruichladdich and estimated debt of £10 million (US$16 million) that Rémy Cointreau assumes.
