Provenance, prowess and passion: The Glenturret releases 2022 core collection of small-batch whiskies

The Glenturret, the single malt Scotch whisky produced at Scotland’s oldest working distillery, has released its 2022 Core Collection, introducing a new 7 Year Old Peat Smoked expression.

The 2022 line-up also features The Glenturret Triple Wood, 10 Year Old Peat Smoked, 12 Year Old, a 15 Year Old and two rare single malts: 25 and 30 Years Old. The whiskies are said to personify the 259-year heritage of the distillery, which has always placed provenance, prowess and passion at the heart of its whisky creation.

The collection was crafted by The Glenturret Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno and follows the 2020 maiden release and 2021 range.

“Continually building on the relationship between our whisky drinkers and The Glenturret, the 2022 Release introduces more American oak influence this year and our new 7 Year Old Peat Smoked,” Dalgarno said.

The Glenturret Managing Director John Laurie commented: “For centuries, The Glenturret has been producing some of the finest, small-batch single malts by hand. We are so proud to have built a team who are true experts in the traditional production techniques we employ, and who share our values of passion, prowess and provenance.

“It means that each year we release a new collection, we can build on the year before and release single malts that are even more special than the previous year. We hope our customers will enjoy the new 2022 range as much as we do, especially now that we have added a new expression.”

The Glenturret Triple Wood is described as a “sweet and spicy yet soft whisky”, matured in American and European oak sherry seasoned casks alongside Bourbon barrels, with a golden colour. Last year’s edition won several gold medals, including the recent Spirits Business Scotch Whisky Masters 2022.

The Glenturret newcomer, its 7 Year Old Peat Smoked, takes inspiration from the rugged landscape that surrounds The Glenturret distillery. The whisky is matured in American oak sherry seasoned casks to build sweetness while refill casks offer smoky notes.

Peat has always featured heavily in The Glenturret’s distilling history, with records showing that its peat originally came from the mosses at the distillery’s water source.

The 10 Year Old Peat Smoked celebrates the varying sources of peat used in the creation of  The Glenturret whiskies, with smoke flavours evolving and changing through time. The liquid is matured in both first fill and second fill European and American oak casks to give a complex single malt with a 50% ABV.

Last year’s 10 Year Old Peat Smoked claimed several gold medals at international spirits competitions and was recently awarded the Masters Medal at The Spirits Business Scotch Whisky Masters Competition 2022.

The Glenturret 12 Year Old is taken from less than 60 casks with American oak Hogshead casks driving a dessert-like sweetness, while European oak layers dried fruits and spices to give a full, rich single malt. The 15 Year Old is described as an expression “laden with dried fruits and spices”.

The “extremely scarce” older expressions are being released in restricted numbers. The 25 Year Old is limited to just 210 bottles and produced from only three casks – two European oak butts on one refill hogshead – each with a different character, to balance both intense and light notes on the palate.

The Glenturret noted that its 2021 25 Year Old sold out in less than one month after its release, adding that the 2022 expression is expected to have a similar appeal.

The Glenturret 30 Year Old is limited to 750 bottles. The liquid is derived from a selection of rare casks from The Glenturret’s traditional Dunnage Warehouses. A Niepoort Portuguese oak cask, which is over 100 years old and influences the whisky’s ruby colour, drives the tropical flavours found in this single malt. The expression is further enhanced by European oak sherry and Moscatel casks.

The new Glenturret range is available now through selected retailers and distributors and on The Glenturret website.

As reported, The Glenturret launched a limited-edition super-premium single malt whisky series in collaboration with renowned French glassmaker Lalique in December 2020. Brand parent Glenturret Holding is a joint venture between luxury goods house Lalique and Swiss entrepreneur Hansjörg Wyss (Lalique’s second-largest shareholder).

The first offering from the series – known as The Glenturret by Lalique – is Glenturret Provenance. With an RRP of £9,800 (US$13,075), the release was restricted to 320 decanters.
