Prague Airport issues duty free tender with ten-year contract at stake

CZECH REPUBLIC. Prague Václav Havel Airport has issued a tender for a ten-year duty free contract covering 4,372sq m across terminals 1 and 2. It will include new walk-through space of 1,489sq m in Terminal 1. Categories covered by the tender include core category duty free, fashion and gifts.

The bid deadline is 2 April, with a winner likely to be named by July. The airport company said the lease term is expected to run from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2029.

Prague Airport said its goal with the tender “is to find one of the best worldwide players in the field of duty free sales to secure both the development of duty free services and increase customer satisfaction”. It noted that the bid is among “the biggest non-aviation tenders to be held at Prague Airport”.

The new ten-year contract will cover both Prague Airport terminals and is scheduled to begin on 1 January 2020.

The contract will include the exclusive rights at the airport to sell certain core duty free categories. At least 10% of the commercial space should also be devoted to goods that represent or are symbolic of the Czech Republic.

Potential candidates must have at least three years’ experience managing duty free retail; must have operated duty free/duty paid stores covering a footprint of at least 3,000sq m, and had business at an international airport handling 15 million passengers per year or above. Among the key requirements is to submit a plan for omni-channel retail, including potential cooperation with airlines.

The airport’s current duty free partner is Lagardère Travel Retail.

Prague Vaclav Havel Airport handled an estimated 16.8 million passengers in 2018, with volumes forecast to rise to 21 million by 2025.

Lagardère Travel Retail currently runs the duty free stores and main fashion concession at the airport; it recently opened new fashion and beauty outlets in T2.
