Perfetti van Melle reveals new business-driving strategy for travel retail

Perfetti van Melle (PVM) will introduce new products, backed by a key business-driving policy, at next month’s TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition & Conference in Singapore (Stand B2 E29).

New on the Asia Pacific market is the Mini Mentos Passport Kit which includes a ‘real’ passport with games and drawings, two stamps, thee crayons, stickers and seven rolls of Mini Mentos in cola, orange, lemon and strawberry flavours.

Mentos Choco is added to the existing Mentos Jumbo Roll while new Mentos gum flavours include Pure Fresh Mint Euca, Pure Fresh Spearmint and Pure White Sweet Mint. Each pack contains 45 pieces.

PVM will also highlight a Chupa Chups Trolls Tin Gift Pack, in three designs, containing eight lollipops.

PVM is backing its launches with a new business-driving strategy for travel retail. It said “must-have” products can drive the sugar confectionery category for retailers and delight travellers. The company will encourage retailers to ensure their product range is up to date.

PVM emphasised the role of the cash till point in travel retail. “As we see in other businesses, the moment at the cash register stays an important point of interest. The purchase is driven by a high impulse decision-making process resulting in direct incremental basket spend,” the company stated.

PVM said research indicated that 48% of travellers would like to find products like sweets, candies and mints at the cash till point; 55% of travellers rate gum as the “perfect product” at this point.

“To ensure we fully support retailers in having the right assortment at the right location we have outlined our snacking items that fulfil the travellers’ needs,” the company said. New “eye-catching” gifting lines to complement core products also play their part in the company’s new strategy and prompted PVM’s decision to change its gum assortment, replacing four existing flavours with three new flavours.

Perfetti van Melle Area Manager Travel Retail Asia Benedict Ho said: “PVM has seen much success in the Asia Pacific region, but we still see untapped opportunities for growth in Hong Kong, China, South Korea and Japan. Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand will also be expected to grow at a sustainable pace this year.

“PVM is all about innovation and originality. We strive to be the world’s most innovative confectionery company and we do so by creating imaginative products and brands.

“In travel retail we try to ensure that we have an assortment that will appeal to all ages. We have an extended kids’ line-up that provides more than just candy; something to keep and play with. We provide a wide range of snacking items and have suitable products for the cash till point like our Now Mints or gum items.”
