MALAYSIA. Malaysia Airports served 7.8 million passengers group-wide in November, reaching 67.8% of November 2019 levels. The figures include those across Malaysia’s airport network and at Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen International Airport.
At Malaysian airports the figure for November was 5.2 million or 59.8% of November 2019 numbers. This was the third consecutive month in which passenger traffic exceeded five million.
Crucially, the international sector continued to recover strongly. In November, the figure reached 2.2 million or 50.9% of November 2019 levels. At 43%, this is the highest share of total traffic contributed by international since the COVID-19 outbreak began.
Compared to October 2022 there was a strong increase in traffic to and from Northeast Asia, Southwest Pacific and South Asia via destinations such as Hong Kong, Incheon, Tokyo (Haneda), Perth, Melbourne, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kathmandu and Mumbai.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) welcomed a new Spring Airlines from Nanning, China with once a week frequencies from 21 November. AirAsia recommenced its Taipei service with three weekly frequencies from 1 December.
Adding to the list of airlines operating at KLIA, Air Mauritius and Uzbekistan Airways resumed Mauritius and Tashkent services each with two flights weekly from 1 and 2 November. From 1 December, Cathay Pacific recommenced its service from Hong Kong to Penang while Scoot Airlines resumed its service from Singapore to Kuantan, both with three flights weekly.
Domestic traffic in Malaysia reached 2.9 million travellers, or 68.9% of November 2019 levels.
Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen recorded 2.7million passengers in November, reaching 92% of November 2019 volumes. Within this, international passenger numbers increased by +22.2% compared to November 2019, at 1.4 million.
Overall, the Malaysia Airports network recorded 74.3 million passenger movements in the first 11 months of 2022, reaching 57.9% of the levels recorded during the corresponding period in 2019. ✈
