Passenger traffic at European airports continues to grow but ACI predicts slowdown

EUROPE. Average passenger traffic at European airports grew by 6.4% year-on-year in November 2018 , according to the latest figures from Airports Council International Europe.

Passenger volumes at airports within the EU grew by 6.7% in the same month, with the pace of growth having increased every month since last July.

“We are facing a Eurozone close to stagnation with business confidence now at a four-year low, coupled with global growth losing momentum in a synchronised way and a slowdown in trade.” – ACI Europe Director General Olivier Jankovec

Airports in Austria, Greece, Malta, Luxembourg and most eastern EU countries posted double-digit growth in passenger traffic, including jumps of: 24.2% in Vienna, Austria; 18.1% in Bratislava, Slovakia; and 17.8% in Düsseldorf, Germany. However, Swedish and Slovenian airports continued to lose passenger traffic, with falls of 1.6% and 3.6% respectively.

Passenger growth at non-EU airports in Europe stood at 5.3% in November, the weakest monthly performance since January 2018.

ACI Europe Director General Olivier Jankovec said: “On the passenger side, demand for air transport keeps defying an increasingly challenging geopolitical and economic environment. [However], the party could be ending soon.

“We are facing a Eurozone close to stagnation with business confidence now at a four-year low, coupled with global growth losing momentum in a synchronised way and a slowdown in trade… There is no doubt that passenger demand levels are going to feel the effects at some point.”

The latest figures from ACI Europe show that the Group-1 airports to enjoy the largest growth were Antalya in Turkey, Moscow Sheremyetevo, London Stansted, Rome Fiumicino and Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport.
