GERMANY. Frankfurt Airport welcomed 5.2 million passengers in August, and although down -24.9% against the same month of 2019, hit a new monthly high since the start of the pandemic. The rise against last year was +54.1%, which operator Fraport said was driven by an ongoing high demand for holiday flights.

The airports in Fraport’s international portfolio also continued to benefit from the recovery in passenger demand.

DENMARK. Copenhagen Airport narrowly topped 7 million passengers across the key summer months of June, July and August. In August, the airport welcomed 2,328,339 incoming and outgoing passengers, which means that eight out of ten travellers have returned compared to pre-COVID figures.

The recovery of traffic towards pre-COVID levels is mainly happening on the European routes, operator Copenhagen Airports noted. Spain tops the list of the most popular destinations, with 668,516 passengers departing to the country during the three summer months, corresponding to a decrease of just over -3% compared to 2019 levels.

Strong passenger numbers were recorded at Copenhagen airport across the key summer months, driven by popular European holiday destinations

Passengers departing to Greece (415,500) and Turkey (398,488) over the June-August period stood at +10% and +11% respectively compared to 2019.

“It was a busy summer at Copenhagen Airport, and it’s been great to see the terminals teeming with life and excited holiday-bound travellers. Clearly, a great many people have longed to start travelling again, and most of our travellers were bound for sunny getaways,” said Copenhagen Airports Chief Commercial Officer Peter Krogsgaard.

JORDAN. Airport International Group (AIG) has reported that Queen Alia International – the airport serving Jordan’s capital city, Amman – has welcomed 5,139,090 passengers (PAX) during the first eight months of 2022.

The number marks a +103.9% surge and -16.6% decline against 2021 and 2019 figures, respectively.

Queen Alia International Airport was very close to matching pre-pandemic passengers in July (-1.2%), but was -10.5% behind the 2019 number in August

In August, the 942,286 passengers recorded show a +41.6% growth against the 2021 number, and -10.5% behind the same month of 2019.

AIG CEO Nicolas Claude said: “While our August traffic statistics point towards some improvements, thanks partly to increased travel during the Eid and summer holidays, the numbers remain below those of 2019.”

He added: “Nevertheless, we at Airport International Group will continue to work towards expanding QAIA’s destination and airline networks, while further bolstering our customer service levels, to maintain passenger satisfaction and promote enhanced traffic at Jordan’s prime gateway to the world.”
