Metaphorical and literal jungles combine in Desigual’s SS18 collection

Spanish fashion house Desigual unveiled its Spring/Summer 2018 women’s collection, in collaboration with Jean-Paul Goude, at last week’s New York Fashion Week. The Moodie Davitt Report was the exclusive travel retail media present at the catwalk show, whose audience included actresses Macarena Garcia and Janina Uhse and singer Marianne Mirage.

The SS18 collection marks Jean-Paul Goude’s first step as Artistic Director of the band. Goude was tasked with creating a presentation that would bring both bold novelty and unique appeal to complement Desigual’s long-established DNA, which celebrates optimism and individuality.

Optimism and individuality: The SS18 women’s collection blends cross-cultural references

The runway show and its accompanying performance were designed as an immersive experience and celebrated diversity, eclecticism and originality. The music was created by Sam Spiegel in collaboration with Goude and the choreography was overseen by Ryan Heffington, with Goude’s input. Each model represented a singular character from a different group, with make-up and hairstyles that aimed to further push the boundaries of imagination.

The women’s fashion Spring/Summer 2018 collection is inspired by a voyage through different types of jungles: exotic, psychedelic, and more. It blends cross-cultural references in a display of colour and creativity, optimism and singularity and non-conformity and vitality. The silhouettes are casual but textured and there is an emphasis on looseness and pattern.

The Spring/Summer 2018 show also includes a 16-piece capsule collection, designed by Jean-Paul Goude, called Desigual Couture. Describing his creative involvement, Goude said: “I sought to champion cultural diversity, street-chic as a democratised form of Couture, festivity, originality, rhythm, and humour – these are the values that not only refer to Desigual’s DNA, but to my own, as well. Let’s say we are on the same wavelength.”

The Spring/Summer 2018 Desigual show was live-streamed to over one million viewers via social media and on desigual.com. The stream featured feeds from 16 cameras, and was shared in real time on Instagram.
