Melbourne Airport releases duty free tender

AUSTRALIA.  Melbourne Airport today called for expressions of interest for its duty free licence at the airport’s international terminal.

The airport company noted that the timing coincided with the beginning of a comeback for overseas travel. Dufry is the incumbent retailer.

Australia’s second-busiest airport is offering an experienced partner the opportunity to deliver an “exceptional” duty free experience across the international terminal’s existing 3,600m duty free space as well as the airport’s online ecommerce platform.

“Our international terminal offers some of the most desirable brands in the world and an array of tempting dining experiences,” said Melbourne Airport Chief of Commercial Property and Retail Andrew Gardiner.

“We are looking for a partner who can continue to deliver a retail offer that reflects Melbourne’s uniqueness and creates a wow factor that excites travellers on their journey.

“Also important to us is a partner’s ability to deliver on best-practice environment and sustainability principles that align with our focus.

“This is an exciting opportunity as we start to see a return to international travel. In April this year we were back at 35 per cent of pre-COVID international passengers, just two months after borders re-opened.

“More than 60 per cent of the international airlines that served the airport prior to COVID-19 have already returned, and we will welcome back more in the coming months.

“International passenger numbers are forecast to more than double by 2042 to over 29 million, up from 11.6 million in 2019.

“Despite the disruption of the past few years, we have continued to invest in the airport to deliver a consistently high standard of traveller experience and to cater for passenger growth,” Gardiner said. “We are seeking government approval for our proposed third runway, undertaking investment to improve our road network, and working with the Victorian and Commonwealth governments to deliver a rail link to the airport.

“Now is the time to be part of Melbourne Airport’s exciting growth, and we look forward to receiving submissions from suitably experienced and committed operators,” Gardiner concluded.

Interested parties can register online at www.melbourneairport.com.au/dutyfree to express their interest for tender documents (by 18 May 2022). Expected commencement of the contract is June 2023.
