CHINA. China International Consumer Products Expo (Hainan Expo) this week revealed its official mascots for the pioneering event due to be held in Haikou on Hainan island from 7 to 10 May,

Yuan Yuan and Xiao Xiao – or collectively Yuan Xiao for the duo – were officially introduced at a press conference in Haikou on 18 March to mark the 50-day countdown before the event begins.

The mascots are based on the famed Hainan gibbon, unique to the island. They are the rarest primates in the world, according to Hainan International Economic Development Bureau (Hainan IEDB).

According to a report in Haikou Daily, just 30 or so Hainan gibbons remain, a status that fits well with the Expo’s values of ecological protection and green consumption (including an environmentally friendly exhibition).

“The gibbons embody the elements of Hainan,” said Hainan IEDB Global Press Officer Lu Silan.

Yuan Yuan is a female gibbon, whose name means perfection and reunion. Her male counterpart’s name, Xiao Xiao, is taken from the Chinese word for Fair (Xiao).

The female Hainan gibbon is yellow, hence Yuan Yuan’s colour, while the male is black, so Xiao Xiao is gray-black. Two Hainan gibbons hug within the shape of a love heart, in which a coconut tree reflects the tropical climes of Hainan.

The Expo is considered an event of both regional and national performance and is seen as an important platform for boosting domestic consumption and accelerating the repatriation of foreign spending to China.

The Hainan Expo will focus on high-end consumer products showcased over some 80,000sq m of exhibition space. The international exhibition area is 60,000sq m, featuring more than 600 companies and over 1,000 brands. China’s leading travel retailers are attending with sizable management and buying teams are many physical and ecommerce retailers.

The Moodie Davitt Report is working closely with Hainan IEDB and local media to promote the event to an international audience. We will be bringing you live coverage from the Expo.
