French beauty and wellness company L’Occitane Group — a Gold Partner at the Virtual Travel Retail Expo — has signed a multi-year agreement with recycled plastic producer Loop Industries to transition its entire range to 100% sustainable PET plastic by 2025.
The partnership will see the L’Occitane en Provence brand incorporate Loop Industries’ sustainable PET plastic beginning 2022. It aims to increase the brand’s current use of 30% recycled plastic to 100% in three years.
Loop Industries leverages innovative upcycling technologies to transform plastic bottles, packaging, carpet, ocean plastics and polyester textiles into sustainable plastic packaging solutions.
The partnership reinforces L’Occitane Group’s ‘reduce, reuse, react and recycle’ sustainability programme, which was designed using the United Nation’s Sustainability Development Goals as a framework.
The company also signed the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment to drive wider industry action against plastic pollution.
L’Occitane Group introduced eco-refills in 2008 as part of its ongoing commitment to close the loop on plastic waste. It currently has 15 products with eco-refill options that use 90% less packaging than traditional formats.
Since 2014, L’Occitane Group has also been working with recycling company TerraCycle to provide in-store recycling facilities in its boutiques. It currently offers these recycling facilities in 30% of its retail network with the aim of reaching 100% by 2025.
“Our brand is inspired by nature, people and culture and we have been using natural plant-derived ingredients and eco-friendly manufacturing for more than 40 years,” said L’Occitane en Provence Global Brand Director Adrien Geiger. “We are therefore very conscious of the importance of eco- design and sustainable packaging. We have been launching eco-refill products, in-store recycling and bottles made out of 100% recycled plastic for more than 10 years and are continuing to progress on this.
“The innovative technology that Loop provides is a game-changer that can help us fundamentally contribute to solving the growing global concern about plastic pollution. We are excited to sign with Loop, representing a significant shift in our approach to plastic.”
Loop Industries Founder and CEO Daniel Solomita added, “Helping companies leverage their packaging as a symbol of their commitment to sustainability rather than a symbol of waste is one of our primary missions. We are so pleased to work with the L’Occitane Group, a leading premium retail brand, to do just that.
“We are convinced that companies that make this transition, use sustainable packaging and encourage recycling, will help restore our environment and create greater economic value.”
