CHINA. Lagardère Travel Retail is stepping up its domestic duty paid presence in China following a series of high-profile openings at the new Beijing Daxing International Airport and some big-name introductions to follow at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport.

Lagardère Travel Retail is the largest retail operator at the spectacular Daxing International Airport, which was inaugurated last month. The French travel retailer manages more than 30 units, covering luxury fashion, beauty, travel essentials, specialty and food & beverage, on the domestic level.

Lagardère Travel Retail is also opening a series of mono-brand beauty and fashion stores at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport.

Speaking to The Moodie Davitt Report during the TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes this month, Lagardère Travel Retail CEO North Asia Eudes Fabre said, “We’re developing a number of mono-brand boutique stores, such as Estée Lauder [just opened at Daxing], and we also opened the first standalone Jo Malone boutique in Shanghai Hongqiao in May – the brand’s first standalone store in an airport in China. We’re opening there with Givenchy early next year and Dior after that. We’re also opening a duplex Chanel standalone beauty and accessory store at Shanghai Hongqiao in November, the first time this concept opens in an airport.

“In Daxing our 30+ units represent all our businesses, from our Relay bookstores to our Discover gifts and souvenirs concept; and toys with Lego. We also have a wide range of fashion brands, including Emperor Armani, Versace, MCM, Jimmy Choo, Tory Burch, Kenzo, Tommy Hilfiger, Gucci Watches & Jewellery, Bally, Tumi, Pandora and many others (see panel below). With beauty, we’ve opened the Estée Lauder mono-brand store as well as a perfume store under our ‘Amuse’ concept. We also have Victoria’s Secret, DVF (Diane Von Furstenberg) and others.

“Then we also have food & beverage. We’ve opened Godiva Café as well as a Japanese dessert brand and a juice bar. So it’s really about integrating our different business lines and integrating our different concepts in order to be able to best serve the customer and provide a holistic experience, but also encourage real cross-shopping. So if you’re shopping in our luxury stores, while you wait we will get you a drink or a dessert from one of our other stores. Or after you’ve bought in our luxury stores, we will give you a fashion magazine, for example, from Relay.”

A modern-day wonder of the world: Beijing Daxing International Airport
Within beauty, Lagardère Travel Retail has opened an Estée Lauder mono-brand store as well as a perfume store under its Amuse concept

Commenting on Daxing, Fabre said, ”Daxing is the ultimate milestone in a sense that people will come to talk about the before-and-after Daxing in Chinese airports – just like there was the before and the after with Beijing Capital International Airport T3 for the Olympics. I think the fact that there is such a strong brand line-up with a lot of firsts in a domestic airport in terms of brands, really opens the eyes to the entire luxury industry of the potential and of the value of the channel.”
