KLM Tax Free Services and Kappé unveil new retail approach at Schiphol – 24/03/05

NETHERLANDS. KLM Tax Free Services and Kappé have commented on the new retail techniques deployed in their second jointly-operated megastore at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, opened earlier this month.

The 1,000sq m store, located in the so-called “run area” near the recently extended Lounge 1 in the Schengen Area, offers liquor, tobacco, fragrances and cosmetics under one roof.

Commenting on the retail techniques employed in the new outlet, Ico Smid, Head of Airport Retail at KLM Tax Free Services, said: “The new store is designed to ensure that travellers can do their tax free shopping at speed. It boasts a variety of new techniques, including a “˜narrow casting system’ that allows digital promotional messages to be directly conveyed to various target groups. This ensures that shoppers can easily find whatever products they are looking for. Flat screens and scan kiosks draw shoppers’ attention to promotional items and discount offers.”

The store is designed to be clear and convenient, he added. “The new store has 1,000sq m of floor space. The 18m-wide entrance is very enticing and the smart signposting makes it easy for customers to find whatever they need,” he said.

The store was opened by Kappé owner Jacques Parson and Ico Smid (pictured). KLM and Kappé jointly opened their first joint store near Lounge 3 seven years ago.
