Indonesia’s largest airport terminal project confirmed to launch in 2021

INDONESIA. State-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II has confirmed that the construction of a new terminal at Jakarta’s busy Soekarno-Hatta International Airport will begin in 2021.

Last week, Angkasa Pura II President Muhammad Awaluddin said building work for the Terminal 4 project would start in the first half of 2021 across a vast area of 130 hectares. Completion is set for 2024, a timescale that Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo has requested.

Angkasa Pura II Senior Vice President Achmad Rifai noted: “All the land is owned by the airport company so we are expecting the construction process to be smooth. The land is currently used for golf courses, offices and cargo terminals. The cargo area will be moved and developed into a cargo village that will help accelerate Indonesia’s economic growth.”

Soekarno-Hatta’s Terminal 3 (above) will be superseded by Terminal 4 in capacity terms

Terminal 4 will be built with a planned capacity of around 40 million passengers per year and will become the largest terminal in Indonesia. Currently the biggest is Soekarno-Hatta’s Terminal 3, whose annual capacity is 25 million. Last year, the Garuda hub processed 66.9 million passengers making it the world’s 18th busiest airport.

Designs being scrutinised now

Angkasa Pura II is currently in the final design judging stage for the new terminal with two consortia left in the running according to the airport operator. The interior design concept for Terminal 4 is described as “futuristic” while also “adopting local culture”.

There will be a big focus on smart environments from mobility to security as well as the implementation of intelligent building management systems to make the terminal as eco-friendly as possible.

On the non-aeronautical side, Angkasa Pura II said: “We will create special concepts related to the commercial offer, paying close attention to flow management and oriented towards customer satisfaction.”

ARI International and local partner Aura Cantik have a joint venture at Terminal 3 in the beauty and fashion/accessories categories under the Jakarta Duty Free fascia. Aura Cantik and another local firm, Dewata Agung Wibawa (Plaza Bali) were awarded the duty free concessions there in 2016.

Once Terminal 4 is finished and a revamp of Terminals 1 and 2 brings them up to a capacity of 40 million passengers, Soekarno-Hatta is expected to be able to process around 110 million passengers annually.
