Until recently, this daily feature offered a regular snapshot of vibrant scenes, moments, launches and campaigns from the global aviation and travel retail sphere. As the COVID-19 crisis brings the worldwide travel industry to a near halt, the images we see are increasingly ones of emptiness and eerie silence within airports as store and restaurants fall shut and workers often outnumber passengers.
Today’s selection comes from our Chinese content partner Globuy, who shared some images from Tokyo Narita Airport. These show how parts of the airport have been temporarily transformed into impromptu accommodation for inbound passengers awaiting COVID-19 results.
According to Globuy, all Japanese citizens returning from overseas must live in the airport’s temporary quarantine area for periods of six hours to much longer while awaiting their test results. The temporary cardboard beds were originally developed for use in evacuation centres during disasters.
As reported, Tokyo Narita Airport has closed one of its runways and further curtailed commercial activity across its terminals as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. With numbers rising sharply in Japan, the government declared a state of emergency in Tokyo, Osaka and five other prefectures earlier this week.
