Image of the Day: The right kind of monopoly at Hong Kong Airport

Our regular feature celebrates important and/or memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns from the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

Now this is just brilliant, truly a travel-exclusive with a difference, writes Martin Moodie.

Hong Kong International Airport has launched a Hong Kong-exclusive edition of the popular Monopoly board game. It allows players to buy, sell and build airport facilities and infrastructures at the roll of the dice (some might argue the worldwide airport tender process is based on a similar proposition).

There are six unique airport-inspired tokens such as baggage trolley and marshaller, and plenty of surprises hidden in the ‘Chance’ and ‘Mileage’ cards.

From what I can make out, none of the properties are dedicated to shops or restaurants (surely Duty Zero by cdf or Beauty&You by The Shilla Duty Free should be on the square occupied by Mayfair in the original game?), though travelling consumers would no doubt like to land on the ‘Free Parking’ space, benefit from Smart Check-in, and avoid Departure Tax.

But with so many flights still grounded and Hong Kong International Airport running at a tiny fraction of its usual traffic levels, I recommend that players do everything they can to avoid picking up the Chance card that says ‘Go to Jail – Go directly to Jail – Do not pass Go, do not collect $200.’

Wow, that’s tough. Do not pass Go? Heck, thanks to this damned pandemic, we’re struggling to get past Stop.
