Image of the Day: Glassed-in island forest brings breath of fresh air to Vancouver Airport

CANADA. The Pier D expansion project has officially been completed at Vancouver International Airport, encompassing an unusual visual treat for passengers at the travel hub. It features a stunning glassed-in island forest, with access to the outdoors.

The new terminal expansion – which will not yet open to the public until more traffic returns to the airport, as COVID-19 restrictions continue to take a toll on the travel industry in Canada – also features eight new gates, an immersive digital experience, a yoga, prayer and quiet room, a private nursing room and even a pet relief area.

The glassed-in island forest is the visual centrepiece of Vancouver International’s largest expansion project since 1996

This milestone expansion – the largest at the airport for 25 years – involved the efforts of more than 500 individuals. Construction efforts were led by PCL Construction and the design team included staff from Kasian Architecture and Creacom and Eos Lightmedia, which brought the digital experience in Pier D to life.

A Vancouver International spokesperson told The Moodie Davitt Report: “The Pier D Expansion is a strong investment in our future at YVR and positions us well for when air traffic rebounds to pre-pandemic levels. We hope this glimpse provides some excitement for the future of travel at YVR.”
