For now, like the bubble itself, the celebratory balloons at Hong Kong International Airport will have to be deflated, the Heinemann welcoming gifts set aside.

The symbolism of today’s choice of images is all too obvious – and poignant – following the last-minute postponement of the long-awaited Air Travel Bubble between Singapore and Hong Kong that had been due to launch on Sunday.

However, a spike in untraceable cases in Hong Kong meant that the authorities in both locations made the joint (and correct) decision to postpone the bubble for at least two weeks.

Hong Kong International Airport was all dressed up for a celebratory party to welcome the first Air Travel Bubble guests from Singapore. Alas, the party had to be called off and the balloons, like the bubble, had to be burst. All symbolising a widespread feeling of deflation.

Hopefully, the feared ‘Fourth wave’ will not become a reality in Hong Kong. If it does, the party may have to wait a while yet.
