Hainan Offshore Duty Free Shopping Festival attracts ‘unprecedented’ financial support

CHINA. The inaugural Hainan Offshore Duty Free Shopping Festival kicks off with an opening ceremony on 28 June.

The mega event, designed to stimulate the island province’s all-important duty free shopping sector, will run until year-end and feature over 50 promotions.

Various official departments, city and county governments, and offshore duty free retailers will focus their marketing efforts around key shopping periods, including the summer holidays, National Day and Singles’ Day (11 November).

Their activities will feature a wide variety of rich content and distinctive themes, including the Makeup Festival, the Handbag Festival, and Holiday Prices.

The mega event will involve multi-channel, high-frequency, online and offline promotions to boost visibility for the offshore duty free business. It will also help publicise the forthcoming China International Consumer Products Expo (Hainan Expo) to be held in Haikou from 26 to 30 July.

According to our colleagues at Hainan Daily*, the Shopping Festival will have a particularly international focus. In addition to exciting and affordable activities held by government departments and duty free retailers, it will also leverage the spill-over effect of the Hainan Expo to promote the launch of high-end international brands in Hainan and help establish the island as a leading destination for new fashion consumption.

Hainan Daily described the level of financial support for the event as “unprecedented”. In addition to the issuance of CNY20 million (US$3 million) of duty free shopping coupons from 25 June, the provincial government pledged to inject further funds in due course. City and county governments will also be issuing consumption coupons.

Duty free retailers will continue to issue shopping coupons via the Haiyiban app, a public services mobile application operated by the Hainan government. These can be used together with government consumption coupons. Many discounts will also be available.
