Haikou Meilan Airport Duty Free Shop has revealed further details of the three new stores it plans to open later this year as part of the development of Hainan Island’s tourism infrastructure.
The projects, which we first reported in January, were confirmed by Deputy General Manager and Investment & Procurement Director Amos Xu, speaking at Monday’s TFWA Asia Pacific Conference in Singapore.
The 300,000sq m Haikou Aviation Tourism Duty Free Plaza will be located in front of the Haikou Meilan Airport Terminal building, and features a duty free zone comprising 18,000sq m of space on level one. It integrates a large commercial complex of duty free with duty paid formats plus cinemas and restaurants. It will cater for the expected surge in visitor numbers to Hainan: passenger traffic is expected to hit 30 million by 2020 and 47 million a decade later.

The 180,000sq m Sanya Aviation Tourism Duty Free Plaza will be located in front of the Sanya Airport Domestic Terminal building, with the commercial complex featuring an airport duty free store as well as an NH hotel, restaurants and a duty paid retail business. It has been designed as a city landmark with a theme inspired by China’s seaside culture. The duty free space will cover 5,756sq m on the sixth floor of the complex.
The HNA MOVA Square city project will also feature shopping as part of the overall mix, along with leisure, entertainment, theatres and museums. The 500,000sq m building is situated opposite local government buildings in the CBD area.
Xu detailed the advance of the company in the past five years, stressing the fact that five years ago Hainan was known to very few in the industry.
He said: “2016 will be an extraordinary year for Meilan Duty Free Shop.”
