Haikou International Duty Free Shopping Complex takes final shape as late 2022 opening beckons

CHINA. The magnificent Haikou International Duty Free Shopping Complex is near completion with opening now expected to take place later this year, China Duty Free Group has confirmed to The Moodie Davitt Report and to state-owned China Daily  (see below).

The final date is likely to be revealed soon with prospects buoyed by the Hainan government’s success in combating the COVID-19 outbreak that hit the island in early August. This prompted the closure of all duty free shops in Sanya from 4 and 5 August and the sporadic shutdown of stores in less-affected Haikou.

As reported yesterday, Sanya travel retailers received the perfect Mid-Autumn Festival gift as new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases fell to zero for the first time in 40 days on 9 September, according to National Health Commission figures.

In a major online photo story this week, China Daily showed latest images of the 926,000sq m Haikou complex taken on 7 September. Construction is progressing “steadily”, its report said, quoting from a briefing with China Tourism Group Duty Free Corporation officials. The complex is expected to open to the public “at the end of this year”, the report said.
