Green v Black rugby competition round two as Ireland seek redemption

NEW ZEALAND/IRELAND. Former Diageo Global Travel senior executive Peter Jacobson, who now runs his own consultancy, was the winner in round one of our latest readers’ competition in association with Walsh Whiskey of Ireland, producer of Writers’ Tears and The Irishman Irish whiskies. Now we head into round 2.

The 2022 expression of the super-premium Writers’ Tears Cask Strength whiskey is limited to 7,920 bottles worldwide. Our best -performer across the three-test series will win one of them.

The competition is dedicated to the three-test rugby international series between Ireland and the All Blacks to be played over three weekends, beginning last Saturday, 2 July.

Walsh Whiskey is offering readers the chance to win a fabulous bottle of whisky via a score prediction in each test and even a superb overall series prize.

After a strong Ireland start, the All Blacks took control of the first test to win 42-19. Peter predicted a 33-17 All Blacks victory, giving him the closest points differential of 11, just ahead of JES Travel Retail Founder Tim Jobber with 13 and Nick Sutton of FILTR.QINGWA with 16.

Walsh Whiskey is offering a bottle of Writers’ Tears Double Oak (pictured below) to the winner of our second test competition.

The contest is particularly relevant to The Moodie Davitt Report with co-owners Martin Moodie and Dermot Davitt hailing from New Zealand and Ireland respectively. Which of the two writers will be in tears come this Saturday?

Form Guide: The two teams have played a total of 34 test matches, with the All Blacks winning 30, lreland winning 3, and one ending in a draw in 1973. However, prior to Saturday, lreland had won three of the previous five encounters, including a comfortable 29-20 victory last December.

Offsetting that possible indicator of an lreland victory is the fact that the men in green have (still) never won a test match in New Zealand. Could this Saturday change that? Get your bets on now.

The rules are simple:

  • Pick the winning team (or draw) in each test and predict a score (you must be directly connected to the travel retail industry to enter).
  • The winner must choose the correct result (i.e. Ireland win, All Blacks win or draw) and the closest entrant on total points differential (i.e. if the first test ended 20-18 to the All Blacks, and you picked them to win 25-16 you would have a differential of 7; if Ireland win 25-12 and you said 23-10 in their favour your differential would be 4) takes out the prize for each test.
  • To win the series prize, you must a) get all 3 test results correct; b) have the closest overall differential for the three matches combined. As simple as a Beauden Barrett or Johnny Sexton drop goal.
  • Send your prediction for the second test to Martin@MoodieDavittReport.com headed ‘All Blacks v Ireland showdown’ by 18.00 New Zealand time (05:00 Ireland time) on 9 July. We will send out a reminder to all series entrants before the third test deadline.
  • Judges’ decision is final.

Here are the prizes on offer:

  • First test: The Irishman Single Malt (pictured left)
  • Second test: Writers’ Tears Double Oak (right)
  • Third test: The Irishman Caribbean Cask Finish (centre)
  • Overall series performance:  Writers Tears’ Cask St. 2022
