Flemingo makes downtown store debut in Mauritius – 10/09/08

MAURITIUS. Fast-growing duty free retailer Flemingo International has opened its first downtown duty free store on the island of Mauritius, and says that it plans to open a second one soon.

The breakthrough extends the company’s portfolio of African destinations. Last month the company revealed that it had captured fresh contracts at Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport, Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Ghana’s main gateway and Roberts International Airport, which serves the capital city of Monrovia in Liberia.

Flemingo Joint Managing Director Rasik Thakker said he expected the airport stores to be opened within the next 60 days. They are currently being furnished, he said, and will offer a mix of liquor, tobacco, fragrances & cosmetics, confectionery, watches and precious and semi-precious jewellery, among other items.

“By achieving these concessions Flemingo has now [gained] a presence in ten African countries,” said Thakker, “and the march goes on. Soon we will announce further good news to the industry.”

As reported, Flemingo has signed a joint-venture agreement with DFS India to operate the Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport duty free concession. And the parties are to create another joint venture to pursue further new business in India.
