DXB continues to lead airport rivals in passenger traffic rankings as Hamad International enters top ten

INTERNATIONAL. Dubai International (DXB) retained the number one position for international passenger traffic across world airports for the period January-October 2020 compared to the corresponding period in 2019. This comes despite a -66% fall in travellers passing through the airport during these months.

The figures – released by travel data analyst ForwardKeys – see Hamad International (-54%), Istanbul (-61%) and Madrid-Barajas (-72%) airports enter a much-changed top ten in a year that saw passenger numbers skewed by the dramatic effects on air traffic of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hong Kong International – dropping nine places from fourth to 13th due to strict travel restrictions imposed by government – dropped out of the top ten along with Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and Taoyuan International airports. Meanwhile, London Heathrow, Amsterdam Schiphol, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Seoul Incheon, Singapore Changi and Frankfurt all retained their places, despite traffic falls of at least -67%.

ForwardKeys Analyst Lorena Garcia attributed Dubai’s continued stay at the head of the table to factors including the strong base of its traffic numbers from 2019 and a positive start to last year, when air passenger numbers grew by +5.3% in January, well ahead of its European competitors.

She also suggested that DXB handled travel restrictions more efficiently, opening borders for international arrivals with “clear straight rules” including the implementation of COVID-19 testing to avoid to the controversial quarantines which have stunted recovery in rival airports.

Still out in front: DXB continues to outperform its main rival airports, despite a damaging fall in air passenger numbers of -66% from January-October 2020
