USA. Miami-based inflight concessionaire Duty Free World is to pioneer a digital duty free programme, which it describes as “the first of its kind in the industry”, beginning 1 April.
Through the technologically advanced programme, customers will be able to view a wide array of products, including those currently featured within United Airline’s onboard catalogue, order them online and have them delivered virtually anywhere in the US.
As reported, United Airlines is dropping its physical onboard retail programme, sourced and managed by Duty Free World, from 31 March.
Explaining the business model further, Duty Free World VP and Chief Operating Officer Leylani Cardoso told The Moodie Davitt Report: “United will continue to receive their commission as they will refer passengers through their site as through the catalogue that will be placed onboard.”
The programme was conceived as a test two years ago in conjunction with the traditional onboard programme, Duty Free World said.

All international travellers can use the website to purchase traditional duty free products, exclusive items and obtain brand insights that include tutorials as well as make-up tips.”
The site can also be accessed through United Airline’s website, Duty Free World said, offering passengers “a new, innovative and simple method to learn about duty free products”.
