Detroit Metro Airport reveals seven new stores amid transformation

USA. Detroit Metro Airport has opened seven new retail stores in the first phase of a transformation of the shopping experience in Concourse A and B at its McNamara Terminal.

These new shops are the first of 36 planned in the terminal. The remaining 29 stores will open by next Spring.

The seven new retail concepts are operated by World Duty Free Group, Paradies and Be Relax; the concepts include:
Detroit! – Local products and Detroit-themed memorabilia
ZoZo – Speciality gifts and home décor located
The Wall Street Journal – Well known newsstand and travel store
The Body Shop – Health/beauty store featuring cosmetics and boutiques located in the Central Link Area of Concourse A
PANDORA – Jewellery store
CNBC Smartshop – A newsstand operation
Be Relax – Full-service spa and lifestyle centre

“Detroit Metro Airport is entirely self-sustaining and does not receive any tax dollars to support airport operations, so our retail programme is an important source of revenue that keeps the airport running,” said Wayne County Airport Authority CEO Tom Naughton. “But just as important, a strong retail programme helps make our terminals exciting and fun. This is a great start in re-energising the airport shopping experience for our passengers.”

“Paradies is proud to continue its successful tradition at Detroit Metro Airport with the opening of these great concepts,” said Paradies President and CEO Gregg Paradies. “As the hottest name in jewellery today, Pandora, along with CNBC, the recognised world leader in business news, are both ideal complements to the new programme at McNamara.”

Expected revenue to be generated by the new McNamara Terminal retail programme is US$7.7 million for the Wayne County Airport Authority in the first full year. Over the seven-year term, US$62 million is forecast to be generated, which will be used to fund airport operations.

The programme will offer passengers a range of nationally known and local brand concepts.

The entire retail transformation is expected to be complete by next Spring, with the transformation of food & beverage beginning about the same time. Request for Proposals for food & beverage concepts will be issued later this summer.

“I think our travellers, visitors and employees will really appreciate the fresh new products, storefronts and services these new concession spaces offer,” said WCAA Director of Concessions and Quality Assurance Greg Hatcher. “These first round retail openings are a noticeable first step in the much larger redevelopment of our McNamara Terminal concession programme, which will better position DTW to serve our travellers well into the next decade.”
