Consumers warned over online sale of counterfeit cosmetics

netnames_logo_320Following a large seizure of fake make-up earlier this month by City of London police, brand protection company NetNames has warned of the dangers of purchasing cosmetics online.

Consumers are advised to be vigilant when purchasing online as the counterfeit cosmetics are unlicensed and may contain hidden dangers.

NetNames Director of Commercial Operations and Communications Stuart Fuller said: “Looking for a good deal, many consumers shop online for make-up. However, in doing so they risk purchasing a substandard or even dangerous product that has not been subjected to the rigorous testing that genuine products must undergo by law. With serious health risks associated with the toxic ingredients used in counterfeit make-up, it is important that consumers are aware of the dangers.”

He advised: “Consumers must take time to check that the website they ordered make-up from is genuine by noting the URL, as well as looking for any discrepancies in the branding, particularly when it comes to labelling. With increased awareness comes power and by taking caution before checking out, consumers can protect both their wallets and their health.”

He added: “Fraudsters are employing increasingly sophisticated tactics to take advantage of the continued rise in e-commerce in an effort to trick shoppers into unknowingly buying counterfeit products. Worryingly, counterfeit goods now make up 10% of global trade, with £1.1 trillion in counterfeit goods estimated to have infiltrated international markets.”
